Will ereaders change the way we experience/share books?
At RethinkBooks, we’ve been testing a variety of ereaders. Recently, we started using the Barnes & Noble Nook ereader. Building on the capabilities of its predecessors, there is one question that the Nook seems to beg, should an ereader be focused on providing a superior book reading experience while leaving other information, communications, games, etc. functionality to other devices? The Nook utilizes the Linux based Android operating system from Google. With a robust operating system, dual display, memory expandability and most uniquely high-speed wireless Internet capability, the Nook could provide many of the functions of an Internet connected computer: email, RSS newsreader, web browser, games, etc.
We suspect that we’re not the only ones asking this question and consumer electronics manufacturers from Cupertino to Shenzhen will propose answers to this question in the coming months as new products are introduced. The devices on the horizon, have led us to our next question, “With an ereader having Internet connectivity, is there an opportunity to share the book reading experience in ways that haven’t been done before?”
