What will we do without physical books to browse?

06Feb10

Costco and Sam’s Club have a unique ability to compel us to buy things we don’t need. With a combination of low prices and the entrenchment of having paid a membership fee, it is not unusual for a shopper at one of these discount warehouses to walk past the stacks of books and throw one in the shopping cart. As previously mentioned on this blog, book covers are a key tool to attract book buyers. What will happen when we start to buy most of our books electronically, will we cease to browse books at retail? Perhaps we’ll browse books at discount warehouses or at traditional bookstores, but then we’ll order the electronic version online. If that happens, it’s unlikely that the Costcos and Sam’s Clubs will continue to stock as many books – which will ironically exacerbate the problem.
